Published: Past Pleasures anthology

Past Pleasures is officially published in paperback today. http://www.xcitebooks.co.uk/Book/6804/Past-Pleasures.html Woohoo! Now that it's out in black and white, I can't quite believe that I wrote a story in which Shakespeare gets fisted. Seems a tad presumptuous. But I'm sure the bard would have been up for it. You can tell from his work he was a game guy ;-)

Here's the blurb:

Viking invaders, punishing Pharaohs, naughty maids and lusty lords come together in this collection of hot historical erotica.

In this selection of stories no one is quite as prim and proper – or as tightly laced up – as you might think. A feisty female highwayman finds love when she orders a duchess to stand and deliver, while a headstrong Southern Belle embarks on an erotic battle of wills with a Union soldier hunting a Confederate spy. And when the Bard of Avon meets a girl with a yen to tread the boards and a taste for the kinkiest of sex, all’s well that ends well.

And here's my humble contribution:

As You Like It by Tilly Hunter
Beatrice’s dearest ambition is to perform on the stage with Will, the greatest playwright and actor ever known and a favourite of the queen’s court. But women are forbidden from appearing in plays. Beatrice seduces Will and teaches him the ecstasy of submitting to her riding crop and her dildo up his arse until he pledges to help her realise her dream. But the main performance is a thorough fisting for the renowned wordsmith on stage after the theatre has emptied.

Five quick tips for writing sexier erotica

I finally finished my latest story but now I have to go away and ignore it for a week or so. Let it mature, like homemade wine. Then rewrite it. In the meantime, I thought I’d share a few tips on how I produce erotica from the viewpoint of someone who edits as well as writes (I work for a newspaper). It’s by no means an exhaustive list and is about what works for me. If you’ve got a great tip of your own, please share it in the comments.

1.   Speak up
Dialogue keeps up the pace and makes your characters seem real. It’s a ball-ache to write. All those quotation marks and a new line every time you switch person. And deciding when it’s obvious who’s talking and when you need to add a ‘he said’, ‘she said’. But it will get a story cracking along and balance out passages of description that slow things down. You can weave description within and between the dialogue rather than having long passages of it stalling the action.

2.   Indulge in some foreplay
In essence, all erotica boils down to this ultra-flash-fiction two-word story: ‘People fuck.’ Fortunately for writers, there are a million and one ways to get to that point and a fair few ways of actually doing the deed. The trick is to build anticipation without losing the reader’s interest. You need just the right amount of foreplay, but you also need to remember it’s a sex story. If it takes forever to get to the sex, your reader is going to give up and watch some porn instead.

3.   Call a cock a cock
Where I live, folk like to call a spade a bloody shovel. I’m not really sure what that means, but I like to call a cock a cock and a cunt a cunt. There’s a fine balance to be had between varying your nouns so as to avoid repetition and ending up using increasingly preposterous words. Surely no-one really uses the word ‘schlong’? I pick two or three, maximum, and keep to familiar words that you would actually use if you were on a drunken night out with your mates. If you end up with repetition, find another way round it. For example, you can refer to different parts of a cock – the shaft, the head etc.

4.   Study logistics
So you’ve got your hero naked and handcuffed to the bed. Hurrah, best place for him, I say. But in the moment of passion, he leaps up and goes on top. Then he leaves the house and heads back to work. Oops. Did anyone unlock those handcuffs? And what’s the boss going to say when he turns up naked? Bondage, in particular, is a logistical nightmare. People who are tied down can’t get up. People who are gagged can’t talk. People who are blindfolded can’t see. It need only take a few words: ‘She freed him,’ but without them it’s just darned confusing.

5.   Sharpen your axe
You’ve reached the magic word count. You breathe a sigh of relief and pop a cork. But you’re only halfway there. Now you have to chop it to shreds and start again. You’ve got simple typos, repetition, jarring descriptions, lack of flow, plot holes and instances of the word ‘cheeks’ where you don’t make it clear whether you’re talking faces or arses. Straight after you’ve finished, you can tighten up your prose and spot straightforward errors. Then I find it best to ignore the work for a while. A week for a short story, a month for a longer work. Once you’ve got some distance between you and your baby, it will be easier to assess it objectively and fix any problems.

Happy writing!

A teaser: Short story snippets

The short story I'm writing at the moment is taking longer than I expected, the result of being a working, single parent, I guess. I could do with a holiday, which is exactly what the couple in my story are having - at a historic cottage sited over an ancient spring. What I didn't realise when I started writing was that I would need to try to imagine what sphagnum moss smells like and how to describe a hand-carved wooden dildo. It's hard work, you know. Here are two snippets to whet your appetite:

‘No reception,’ he said, glancing at his mobile. ‘And no TV, I notice.’
‘That’s why I chose it,’ Maria said. ‘Remote. Secluded...’
‘No-one to hear you scream...’
‘Precisely.’

****

He dipped the moss in the well and squeezed it over her, again and again. She wriggled and moaned in frustration as the cool water tantalised her clit.

I'll put the finished version on here soon, but for now you'll have to use your imagination. Feel free to speculate on how the story goes in the comments section!

Short story: Tools of the Trade

***Update. I've since posted this story to Literotica to get greater exposure for it, so I'll give you a little taster, but click the link to read the rest. ****

Hello out there and welcome to my first blog post. I've hesitated to post a story I wrote a couple of years ago and now, on re-reading, seems to have more than an acceptable amount of corny bits. But I haven't finished the one I wanted to start off with and, hey, I'm just impatient. It seemed appropriate to have a little femdom, too, after the furore surrounding the Fifty Shades trilogy. Am I the only one who kept reading in the hope little Ana would discover her inner dominatrix? Anyway, without further ado, here's one from the files...

Tools of the Trade

Tanya thought about James out there in the garage. Sawing and sanding. Hammering and screwing. Yes, he was out there screwing night after night, she giggled to herself, while she was sitting in the living room bored of watching soap operas. Sure, he was making furniture for their new home, but he needed a break. She needed him to have a break.

And tonight she had a plan. There wasn’t much she needed to take out there. He had plenty of tools and it was her turn to use them.

As she opened the garage door, he didn’t even look up. He was standing at the workbench, sawing a piece of oak. Tanya admired his muscular shoulders through his tight white t-shirt.
‘Hey hun,’ he said. ‘I hope you’ve brought me a cup of tea.’

‘I can do better than that,’ she said. And she quickly bent over to slip one end of a set of cuffs onto his ankle, the other cuff on to the leg of the workbench.
